How to Eat Vegetarian and Meatless at Taco Bell

No meat? No problem.

At Taco Bell, vegetarian options are not an afterthought. Yea, we’ve got Beefy 5-Layer Burritos and a seasonal fav – The Triple Double Crunchwrap, but we also have a ton of other craveable vegetarian options. If this vegetarian stuff is a surprise to you… “Welcome.” We’ve actually got years in our pocket making a mean bean burrito, and today, our menu will have over a dozen easy-to-spot certified vegetarian options, plus two NEW items - the Black Bean Crunchwrap and Black Bean Quesarito.

Taco Bell was the first & still is the only quick-service restaurant to offer American Vegetarian Association (AVA) certified food options. AVA certified Taco Bell vegetarian items are lacto-ovo, allowing the consumption of dairy and eggs but not any animal by-products.

If customizing is more your thing, Taco Bell has 36 American Vegetarian Association-certified vegetarian ingredients (26 of which are also vegan) that can be customized more than 8 million ways - that’s enough to customize a new meal every day for 20,000 years. Another fun fact: Taco Bell sells 350 million vegetarian items a year and about seven percent of all items ordered at Taco Bell are either vegetarian or made meatless by substitution or removal. Our menu items can be modified at the restaurant, online at Ta.co or through the Taco Bell mobile app.

It’s important to note that because vegetarian and meat ingredients are handled in common, we cannot guarantee that cross-contact with meat products will not occur. Neither Taco Bell, our employees, nor our franchisees assume any responsibility for such cross-contact. For more information on allergens, click here.

To make it easier for our vegetarian friends, here are 13 AVA certified menu items at Taco Bell:

Now some of you may be thinking, “Where’s the Spicy Potato Soft Taco?” or “the Cinnamon Twists?” in this list? Don’t worry, we can explain. In some of our restaurants, we use the same frying oil to prepare menu items that may or may not contain meat. Therefore, menu items fried in oil like Hash Browns, Chips, Cinnamon Twists, Potatoes, and the Fiesta Taco Salad Shell may not be acceptable to certain types of vegetarian diets. These items are not certified vegetarian by the AVA, but we are including them in our meatless menu options below.

With that in mind, you can customize a product to make it meatless by substituting the meat for black beans, pinto beans or potatoes or you can order some of these additional meatless options:
