How to Eat Vegetarian and Meatless at Taco Bell

No meat? No problem.

Being a vegetarian is hard. You typically have to double check the ingredients before you eat anything, people assume because you’re vegetarian you’re judging everyone else and their lifestyle and when you go out to eat, options are limited. There are so many restaurants you just can’t eat at, and generally fast food isn’t even an option. Until Taco Bell.

Taco Bell is the first quick service restaurant to offer American Vegetarian Association (AVA) certified food options. The AVA defines vegetarian as lacto-ovo, allowing the consumption of dairy and eggs but not any animal by-products.

Taco Bell sells 350 million vegetarian items a year and about seven percent of all items ordered at Taco Bell are either vegetarian-friendly or made vegetarian-friendly by substitution or removal. Our menu items can be modified however you like at the restaurant, online at Ta.co or through the Taco Bell mobile app.

Now some of you may be thinking, “Where’s the Spicy Potato Soft Taco?” or “the Cinnamon Twists?” in this list? Don’t worry, we can explain. In some of our restaurants, we use the same frying oil to prepare menu items that may or may not contain meat. Therefore, menu items fried in oil like Hash Browns, Chips, Cinnamon Twists, Potatoes and the Fiesta Taco Salad Shell are not acceptable to the AVA certified vegetarian diet because of the potential cross contact.

With that in mind, if you don’t strictly eat foods that abide by the AVA certification requirements, you can customize any product to make it meatless by substituting the meat for beans, rice or potatoes or you can order some of the additional meatless options below:
